A live album without precedent, the one recorded by ZU: in ‘Live In Helsinky’ comes out the best avant-garde and rock sound of the band, among rock elements, bebop inspirations with hardcore forms, alternative melodic gimmicks and continuous improvisations. “A live record that establishes once and for all the coordinates of the band, which are beyond any jazz, out of the reach of alternative rock and light-years away from any punk/hard/core proposal. It has nothing in common with the classic live records: Massimo Pupillo, Jacopo Battaglia and Luca Mai build without stopping, improvise, increasing the loads, each on their own until they cross each other convulsively. The pieces flow into each other or end without endings and without crescendo, without seeking applause, but deserving even more for their integrity. Imagine avant-garde music played with the fury of the hardest rock: the edges of Karate that become even more vivid, the daring plots of a John Zorn with the sudden spurts and shots of Fugazi: at times it seems to listen to Charlie Parker perform his be-bop with hardcore forms, continuously improvised rather than repeated. In reality, every sound comes from inexhaustible research, which in the live dimension is forced by an anxious and immediate push to find urgent solutions, for this reason even more disorienting. Each song proceeds with continuous joints, which, when they can not combine, change direction driven by their own repulsive force. Hence the double effect that the Zu succeeds and risk to generate on the listener”.
