‘Schegge di Shrapnel’ was born from a reading that Wu Ming Contingent presented in Berlin last spring. In these months the musical and textual material has been enriched, has reached a new depth, and has convinced the band members to record it. The voices that alternate are those of those who fought in the trenches during the First World War. They are voices from the everyday, day-to-day of a generation sent to a massacre. From a musical point of view, it’s a material that was born from jam sessions, and that has multiple influences. The link with ‘Bioscop’, the band’s first work, is palpable but it is a step forward in terms of ambition, timbre research, use of sound sources that go beyond the guitar-bass-drums scheme that characterized the previous material. The work has a close thematic link with Wu Ming’s new novel, ‘The Invisible Everywhere’, released in November 2015. In both cases, the focus is on the events of the First World War. ‘Schegge di Shrapnel’, however, constitutes an autonomous musical and narrative experience, with its own poetics and that traces a path of progressive, polyphonic and multiform research.
